The road system

A26 A29 A4 motorway map

Roads are the life blood of the entire region!

The dense road network which criss-crosses the department provides access to the most populous and economically active regions of north-western Europe (A26 - A29), as well as rapid links to facilitate intra-departmental relations.

The A29 motorway (Saint-Quentin/Amiens section) was commissioned in 2001 and the Amiens/A28 section towards Rouen and Le Havre was completed at the beginning of 2005.

The rail network

TGV high-speed rail map of Europe

The entire department is less than one hour from a TGV high-speed train station!

The presence of a well-developed rail network (lines to Paris/Brussels and Paris/Cologne) is enhanced by the proximity of high speed lines, meaning that the entire department is less than one hour by car away from a TGV high-speed train station.

Four stations:

  • Paris Roissy
  • Ablaincourt pressoir
  • Reims
  • Lille

The Est Européenne (East European) high speed rail line, whose completion date is scheduled for 2007, will help to strengthen links between French and European cities.

Waterways

The existence of a Freycinet gauge (350-tonne) waterway network completes the range of transport networks.

Today, as waterways are enjoying a resurgence in popularity (thanks to their lower transport costs and lower energy consumption), the presence of this navigable network is a precious resource for the département and helps to restore the balance between modes of transport.

Airports
